“I Wonder If Mr. Fieldcrest Is Married?”: New Yorker Ads from the “Mad Men” Era

When “Mad Men” finally—finally—returns from its long hiatus on Sunday, many mysteries stand to be resolved: Has Don married Canadian Megan? Did Joan have Roger’s baby? Will Peggy drop acid at the Summer of Love?

No matter the oscillations of the character’s lives (and hairstyles), one thing is certain: there will be ads. In honor of the upcoming season, we’ve looked through the magazine’s archives from the early sixties and culled a smattering of vintage New Yorker ads that recall the boozy, beehive-y “Mad Men” universe.

"The sincerity is what made LCD Soundsystem really dope to me. There’s no half-ass. No one’s “cool.” They like stuff. They’re really particular and hardworking. Everyone’s always talking about how they hate shit. Cause if you say you like something, it makes you a little weaker cause people can attack that. So, as I look at it, LCD Soundsystem are super brave."

"The thing about life is that you must survive. Life is going to be difficult, and dreadful things will happen. What you do is move along, get on with it, and be tough. Not in the sense of being mean to others, but being tough with yourself and making a deadly effort not to be defeated."

"I was a young woman with an evolved mind who was not afraid of her beauty or her sexuality. For some people that’s uncomfortable. They didn’t understand how female and strong work together. Or young and wise. Or Black and divine."
